KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Day was celebrated in a special and significant way by the Chinese community who came together to show their patriotism and love for the country.

Thousands of people representing the community â€" from political figures to grassroots leaders, to representatives of non-governmental organisations, prominent businessmen as well as students â€" attended the Chinese Community Patriotic Assembly at the Putra World Trade Centre, organised by MCA.

This is the first time such a gathering has been organised.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, who was the guest of honour, was visibly pleased with the large turnout, saying that given the theme and the number of people attending, there was no questi on about the community’s commitment and love for the country.

“Not only do we recognise your contribution to the country, the presence of thousands here at PWTC today is a clear sign of your loyalty towards Malaysia,” he said to loud cheers from the audience.

Among those present were MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong, Barisan Nasional secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, Gerakan president Datuk Seri Mah Siew Keong, Liberal Democratic Party president Datuk Teo Chee Kang and Sarawak United Peoples’ Party president Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian.

The Prime Minister said all races, including the Chinese, had a hand in the success and progress of Malaysia, adding that for the country to continue to prosper, this spirit of cooperation must go on.

“There is no doubt that what we have achieved is because of the cooperation and mutual understanding among all races â€" the Alis, Ah Kaus and Muthus who have worked hand in hand, shoulder to shoulder as citizens of this country,” he said.

Aware of what the community yearns for, Najib said the Chinese wanted economic wealth and quality education, but he pointed out that to achieve this requires peace, harmony and stability.

“You also need a government that is fair to you. If there is no peace and harmony, the Chinese would be the first to be targeted.

“That is why the government is committed to maintaining peace and security, harmony and mutual respect.

“We are aggressive in our fight against extremism and IS (Islamic State) because we want to make sure no one in this country, including the Chinese, will be harmed, ” he added.

The Prime Minister said while the community is known for their hard work and entrepreneurial spirit, he pointed out that having a government that “opens doors” for them was an advantage.

“You look at the list of the top 10 richest individuals in Malaysi a. Somewhere along the line, particularly in the early period, the key was given to them by the government led by Umno. We gave them opportunities; we want the community to succeed.”

Najib said a strong representation of the community is needed in the administration.

As it is now, only 6% of the Barisan lawmakers are representing the Chinese in Parliament.

“This is too few. We need the numbers to go up. This is a multi-racial country and representation in the government must reflect this,” he said.

Urging the Chinese community not to fall for the Opposition’s propaganda, the government is committed to bringing more progress and prosperity for everyone to enjoy.

“The Opposition’s slogan ‘ini kali lah’ (this time) should be responded with ‘tak payahlah’ (no need). The Barisan government, the government which I lead as your ‘shou xiang’ (Mandarin for Prime Minister), will continue with our moderate and pro gressive policies,” he said.

Also at the event were Federation of Malaysia Chinese Associations president Tan Sri Pheng Yin Huah, former MCA deputy president Tun Michael Chen, Jiao Zong or United Chinese School Teachers’ Asso-ciation of Malaysia representatives and representatives of various prominent Chinese NGOs.
