Sloane Stephens qualifies for WTA Finals in Singapore
WATCHâ"The WTA race to Singapore:
Sloane Stephens has qualified for the WTA Finals in Singapore, clinching her spot when she was announced as a wild card into this week's event in Moscow and Elina Svitolina was not.
Before that, there had been three spots left in the field for Singapore and four playersâ"Stephens, Karolina Pliskova, Elina Svitolina and Kiki Bertensâ" still in contention. While Stephens, Pliskova and Bertens are all playing in Moscow this week, Svitolina is taking the week off, which means that she cannot move in front of the No. 6-placed Stephens.
The Singapore standings for the final three spots are as follows: No. 7 Elina Svitolina with 3,850 points, No. 8 Karolina Pliskova with 3,840 points and No. 9 Kiki Bertens with 3,710 points.
Simona Halep, Caroline Wozniacki, Angelique Kerber, Naomi Osaka and Petra Kvitova have all qualified for the eight-player field. Even if Pliskova and Bertens move up, Stephens cannot fall lower than eighth and is guaranteed a spot in event.
Both Pliskova and Bertens could move in front of Svitolina with good runs in Moscow, but she will qualify if either does not.
Moscow offers 470 points to the winner. Halep is the top seed, but diagnosed recently with a herniated disk and having clinched the year-end No. 1 ranking, she hinted she may not actually play either Moscow or Singapore. If she pulls out of Singapore, Svitolina, Pliskova and Bertens will all qualify.
