Sometimes it pays to be small. I’ve been in Singapore for a week, testing the waters in this pint-size economic dynamo of the city state. What makes it so successful?

A large part of the answer is international trade. Perfectly situated on some of the world’s busiest trading routes, Singapore’s natural attributes as an entrepôt are underpinned by an open, low-tax, business-friendly approach to economic management â€" governed, thanks to its colonial past, by a British-based legal system.

This makes Singapore the location of choice for foreign companies tapping into south-east Asia’s fast-growing markets. Rolls-Royce and GSK base their Asian operations here.
